A network of drains was dug under Kingston in 1864-64.By the mid 1800s Kingston Upon Thames had a population of over 8,000 people. Then in 1838 the railway reached Kingston. The railway led to the rapid growth the Kingston area. By 1901 the population of Kingston was 37,000. Kingston Upon Thames was made an urban district council in 1894. The Borough of Kingston was formed in 1936. The guildhall was built in 1935.
